D1 Colleges Will Recruit You, You Have To Recruit D2 & D3 Coaches!

Recruiting can be the most challenging, yet exciting, time consuming, yet ego boosting, frustrating yet rewarding challenges that an athlete and that athlete’s family will face. In the end, when approached and tackled properly, it will all pay off. The key is finding the correct fit for every athlete. And that is not an easy challenge. Over the years I have given many speeches and written many blogs about the recruitment of kickers, punters, and long snappers. The goal each time to is to educate athletes and their families one step at time. Here is one more piece of that educational process.

D1 Colleges Will Recruit You. When Alabama, Ohio State, UCLA, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc. need to recruit a specialist, they will find the very best one and usually have them committed within days. Everyone wants to go to these schools and would jump on that opportunity. They also have a huge recruiting budget, the best resources, and the ultimate product to sell. Here is how the conversation goes when a coach from a D1 school calls me, Chris: “I need a list of the best kickers /punters in the nation.” Me: “Sure we have Kicker A ranked #1, Kicker B ranked #2, Kicker C Ranked #3 and so on.” Within hours those athletes are in contact with the coach. Within days the coach has visited the school and done character and academic background checks. Within weeks the athlete and the family are on campus visiting. Sign, sealed, delivered.

Your job when if comes to D1 programs:

Get exposure. Go to Chris Sailer Kicking Camps and get nationally ranked. We are the most trusted specialist resource in the world for college coaches. Make sure to keep your rank current. An evaluation and ranking over time holds much more weight than a single evaluation 1 or 2 years ago. Keep your character intact. Be aware that a college coach will visit with anyone and everyone to make sure that you are a great fit for that program in every way. Get your grades and test scores as high as absolutely possible. Get to college camps in between your junior and senior seasons. This is when most college coaches will ultimately pull the trigger. If you are good enough, Chris Sailer Kicking will get you the exposure to get signed by a D1 program. D1 programs will find and sign the very best. The best programs get the best specialists. The next best programs get the next best specialists. And so on….

D2, D3, NAIA, etc. need you to recruit them. When Azusa Pacific, Colgate, William & Mary, Wesleyan, Nicholls State etc. need to recruit a specialist, they wait to see who the D1 programs are not able to sign and try to land some of the leftover pieces. Not everyone wants to go to these schools, so they aren’t able to be as selective. They do not have a huge recruiting budget, the same resources, nor the ultimate product to sell. Here is how the conversation goes when a coach from a D3 school calls me, Chris: “I recently got some film from Kicker A. He also recently visited the school and has been showing great interest in our program. What do you think Chris?” Me: “Kicker A is a great kicker. He has been to several camps over the years and has really impressed us. He continues to get better and stronger each time that we see him. He shows great D3 talent and potential.” Over the course of the next several months, depending on the time of this call a relationship between coach and player is formed. Perhaps after that player doesn’t get any D1 offers, he may sign with the program. The financials take much longer to figure out at this level. However, there are many great financial packages available.

You job when it come to D2 & D3 programs:

Get exposure (The same holds true for everything said above). You need to see the big picture. Everyone is not a D1 scholarship kicker or punter. In fact, very few are. Most will fall into this category. There are 700+ Universities and Colleges that offer football. There is a great fit out there for you. In fact, there are most likely several. But YOU have to find them. YOU have to recruit them. Do not wait for them to come calling you. Make calls, send emails, take unofficial visits, go to practices, go to games, follow up, etc. Sign up with NCSA for help! Arrange a date to kick or punt for them live. Your sincere interest will land you several college opportunities. These programs can offer partial/full athletic and/or academic scholarships. The more that they want you, the harder they will work to get you money somehow, someway. Believe me.

Never put all of your eggs in one basket. First and foremost always apply as a student first. Football may not work out due to injury or just lack of talent. If you are a legit D1 specialist, focus on D1 but make sure that you have D2, D3, etc. backups in place. If you are D2/D3 specialist, focus on those levels, but don’t be afraid to reach for the stars (you may improve in your final years). There is a home for everyone. Chris Sailer Kicking sees more specialists than anyone in the world and we still cannot find 700+ college level specialists per year to fill needs at every school. If you approach recruiting with a the correct plan in place you will find a home. Anticipate the ups and downs of recruiting and enjoy the ride. Remember you can make the NFL coming from any college. Take a look at NFL rosters and where the specialists played their college ball. The key is finding the right fit where you can continue to develop your skill. And ultimately, whether you make the NFL or not, the reward at the end will be a college degree from a great school that you most likely would not have received without football.

VEGAS NATIONAL EVENTS

Vegas uprights

As you know, the Vegas Events are the biggest and best Kicking and Punting camps in the world. They are truly a national/international event to see how you compete against the best in the nation, and world. The May Event, or VEGAS XXVIII, is the second largest Kicking & Punting camp we run (VEGAS XXVII in January was the biggest). The main difference is the weather and there are less seniors since many have already stepped onto their college campuses for their next stage of their life.

The Vegas Events are NOT an invite only camp. They are first come, first served. Kickers & Punters ranging from 8th grade – JC are allowed to attend.

This is the SUPER BOWL for Kickers & Punters. No other kicking event comes close to the exposure offered by the National Vegas Events. Chris Sailer Kicking is, by far, the most credible recruiting source for Kickers & Punters in the country.  The “TOP 12” and “EVENT ELITE” is the list to be on if you are seeking national exposure. From the Vegas Events, the Chris Sailer Kicking Staff will select the “TOP 12” Seniors/JC & the “TOP 12” Underclassman and “Event Elite”. Over 90% of the “TOP 12” have received full ride D1A scholarships in the past. Over 99% members of the “TOP 12” have gone on to play college football. In addition the “TOP 12” Underclassman will be invited to attend an exclusive summer camp to train and compete amongst that elite group.  The Competition Finals Round Winners (FG, Punt, and LS) will receive FREE Chris Sailer Kicking Camps for 1 FULL YEAR. (Excludes transportation and hotel). The Vegas Events offer the best exposure possible for Kickers & Punters. FBU CAMPS

2016 U.S. Army All-Americans

Once again, Chris Sailer Kicking and Rubio Long Snapping will be teaming up with FBU to run the specialists portion of their camps. FBU is the world’s largest football training service and has hired us to handle their Kicking & Punting section. It is an honor and we are proud to do it again. It is a top notch organization that benefits countless athletes across the country.

Chris Sailer Kicking will be running more camps than EVER.  This year I will only be at the TOP GUN CAMP.  All other locations will have two Chris Sailer Kicking Senior Instructors in attendance (staff members that have been with me for well over 30 camps). They will follow the same format as myself and report directly to FBU and yours truly. Yes, you will get ranked on ChrisSailerKicking.com when you attend an FBU camp.

Based on what we see at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in SC on July 14-15, we will be choosing the two Kickers and two Punters that will participate in the US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL.  Chris Sailer Kicking will also be selecting the East Bay Youth All-American for the Class of 2019 (Freshman All-American Bowl) and 2020 (8th Grade All-American Bowl) based on performances at the FBU TOP GUN CAMP in SC on July 14-15. You MUST be invited to the TOP GUN camp by performing well at one of the regional FBU camps prior to the TOP GUN Camp.

Bottom line, you will have to do well at one of the FBU camps, that our staff  is in attendance at, to pick up an invite from myself and/or one of my senior instructors.

NFL FREE AGENT CAMP

Kai Forbath celebrating after his 50 yard game winning field goal for the Saints. (2015)

Kai Forbath celebrating after his 50 yard game winning field goal for the Saints. (2015)

You (the specialists) asked for it, you got it. They (NFL coaches) asked for it, they got it. As you know, Chris Rubio and myself have always run the biggest and best exposure camps for high school Kickers, Punters and Long Snappers.  For the second year, we are moving into the NFL realm to give the needed exposure to our college athletes.

This one day camp will be a showcase for NFL coaches. There will be little coaching (you shouldn’t need a ton if you are at this camp) as this camp will all be about exposure. NFL coaches and personnel will be on hand to personally see the Kickers & Punters in action.

In order to attend this camp, you must be out of college and be eligible for the NFL draft.

  • March 17, Las Vegas, NV

You can register for the NFL Free Agent camp HERE (spots will be limited)

COLLEGE LEVEL CAMP

This camp will be ONLY for 4 year university college Kickers & Punters AND Kickers & Punters entering into a 4 year university. 1st year JC and freshman, sophomores and juniors in high school can NOT attend this camp.

This will be a very high level camp that will be run similarly to the TOP 12 and EVENT ELITE camp. Cost of the camp will include accommodations, transportation to the fields and the instruction, and meals. This camp is built for Kickers & Punters looking to dominate the college camp and get ready for the NFL.

  • July 15-17, IMG Academy, FL

TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE CAMP

Elite_Top_12

This camp is open ONLY to those invited personally by Chris Sailer. You are chosen to attend this camp by performing extremely well at either the January or May National Kicking/Punting Events in Las Vegas. Do NOT sign up for this camp unless you have been formally invited by Sailer. Former “TOP 12” and “EVENT ELITE” members includes countless college and NFL players, All-Americans, NFL Pro Bowlers and Super Bowl participants.

The “TOP 12” is chosen after the January Event (VEGAS XXVII) and the “EVENT ELITE” is chosen after the spring Event (VEGAS XXVIII). There are obviously 12 chosen for the “TOP 12” and there is no set number for the “EVENT ELITE”. Those that deserve it and are top of their class in May, get chosen…it could be one, it could be 30.

The success rate of those we have chosen have been selected in the past that go on to play college football (most on scholarship) is over 95%.

  • July 18-20, IMG Academy, FL

Invites go out after each Vegas Event.

UNDERCLASSMEN INVITATIONAL

You will almost think of this Event as a baby TOP 12 & EVENT ELITE Camp. This two day event is a camp that Chris Sailer Kicking will be completely gearing towards the athletes and their parents/guardians. This camp is meant to not only get the athletes headed in the right direction in the beginning of their high school careers, but also their parents. It will provide information regarding nutrition, social media, recruiting, film, education and, of course, on field instruction. This event is just as much for the parents/guardians as it is the athletes!

Early exposure is necessary these days. The Chris Sailer Kicking Underclassmen Invitational is the perfect opportunity to make a name for yourself and solidify your national ranking at the perfect time. The middle of the summer is now the time college coaches build their underclassmen lists. You want to be on that list. This camp will get you there. It is also your first opportunity to prove that you are a “TOP 12” candidate in your class. The camp is set in July for a reason, college coaches asked us to do this. They want the inside track early. Don’t be surprised to see more and more underclassmen offered during the season in the near future.

There will be formal meetings/classroom sessions on individual topics such as: Training (what level is right for the underclassmen athlete, how often, proper techniques), Nutrition and Lifting (Good habits, bad habits), Social Media (Setting up and using the proper social media outlets – this has become a must), Filming (proper angles, techniques, times, set up), Education (the importance of it, standards, year by year plan)

  • July 21-22, IMG Academy, FL

Invites go out in May.

Vegas XXVI in Las Vegas, NV is less than a month away.  While many specialists are taking this time of year off, those that seriously want to play in college and know what it takes are working harder than ever.  Those hard workers will be in Las Vegas May 9-10, 2015 ready to impress and gain the most valuable national exposure in the nation.  Here is some useful information for those attending and those that are still considering attending.

•    Event Date: May 9-10, 2015
•    Arrive Friday May 8th.  The earlier that you arrive, the more well rested you will be for the weekend.
•    Plan on being at camp until 4PM Sunday May 10th.  There is no way of knowing if you will make the Finals Round Sunday until you and all other participants have completed the initial round of charting Sunday morning.  Whether you make the Finals Round or not, you should plan on staying on watching the Finals Round.  Get the full experience from the camp!
•    Friday Small Group Sessions (3:00 – 4:00 & 4:00 – 5:00) are OPTIONAL.  These were designed to knock some rust off, get rid of jet lag legs, and gain confidence heading into Saturday.  If you can make it, I highly recommend you attend. CLICK HERE
•    Location: Las Vegas Outdoor Soccer 1400 N. Rampart Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89128
•    There is no bleacher seating.  Bring chairs or buy some cheap chairs if you would like to sit while you watch.
•    Why May? May is also known as “Evaluation Period” for college coaches.  This is a very HOT time for recruiting for all classes.  May offers maximum exposure.  Chris Rubio and myself will be handing 100′s of calls after this event.  Recruiting Boards will be set based on results and our evaluations.  Want to be offered a scholarship at those college camps this summer?  Attending this camp is how they will know about you!
•    Vegas XXVI gives you a chance to make the “Event Elite”.  There is NO set number of specialists that will be selected.  The number selected is based on the number of participants that can compete at that VERY HIGHEST LEVEL.  Usually 20-25 are selected to join the “TOP 12″ at the most prestigious Invite Only Camp in the world.  CLICK HERE
•    Think you are good enough to make the “Event Elite” – CLICK HERE to see who you are competing with and to get a little history about the “TOP 12″ & “Event Elite”
•    It is no surprise that from Vegas XXV in January that the “TOP 12” are already getting major attention and full scholarship offers.  Who will be next?
•    The Spring Event in NOT an Invite Only Camp.  This camp offers a great experience to kickers, punters, and long snappers of all levels.  Expect a wide range of talent from beginners to the best of the best from around the world in the Classes of 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, Junior Colleges and 4-Year Transfer Students.  The best of the best, The “Event Elite”, selected from the Spring Event will be invited to attend the “TOP 12″ and “Event Elite” Camp in June.
•    Come prepared to enjoy your experience.  Do NOT put to much pressure on yourself.  Come with open eyes and ears.  Learn from your instructors and your peers.  Look around and take it all in.  Watch other groups.  Watch the college and pro demo.  Attend the Meetings.  There are so many things to learn and that you can and will benefit from if you take advantage.  Leave the camp with goals and a motivation to work harder than ever!
•    Saturday – Instructional Day.  You will get plenty of reps.  Pace yourself.  Saturday ends with a Chris Sailer Kicking Original Last Man Standing Competition. Your group numbers will be emailed to you about a week prior to camp.
•    Sunday – Competition Day.  You will be charted.  You can compete in 1, 2, or all 3 skills.  This is up to you.  Your competition start time will be assigned to you at Check-In Saturday.
•    Those that just punt – you are automatically in Group #2 on Saturday.
•    Class of 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016 – You may use tees up to 2″ for both Field Goal and Kickoffs.  The choice is yours.  Class of 2015, JC, and Transfers you must kick off the ground for Field Goals and use a 1″ tee for Kickoffs.
•    Saturday Meetings are the the Group Rate Hotel – JW Marriott.  I highly advise that participants and their parents attend.  Get there early and enjoy.
•    What makes Chris Sailer Kicking the best in the business?  1st National Camp Ever for Specialists.  1st Kicking Company to ever to rank Kickers, Punters, and Long Snappers on a true national scale.  Chris Sailer is physically at EVERY camp associated with Chris Sailer Kicking.  Chris Sailer is the ONLY one that handles the evaluations and rankings for the Kickers and Punters.  Same holds true for Chris Rubio with the Long Snappers.  Talk to any college coach in America or any kicker or punter that has been to multiple camps and will see that Chris Sailer Kicking is the place to be for the best possible instruction and exposure.  Our advertising is word of mouth.  Come see for yourself!  See you in May!
