5 October Recruiting Tips For All Kickers/Punters

1. Enjoy getting used to high school.

2. Attend private & group lessons.  Perfect your technique.

3. Attend a 1-Day Chris Sailer Kicking Fall Camp in your area.

4. Sign up for Vegas XXVII, the experience will pay off tenfold.

5. Breathe, relax and understand that your simply learning how to one day be recruited.

Sophomores:

1. Enjoy your sophomore season.  It won’t be long and you will be an upperclassmen.

Juniors:

1. Dominate the remaining part of your junior season.  It doesn’t matter if you are having a great season to date, or currently struggling for one reason or another.  Stay focuses or regather your focus and put your best foot forward from here are on out.  Yes, college coaches are watching.

2. Take unofficial visits.  Get on campus.  Get your name and face in front of college coaches.  Take trips to D1, D2, D3, NAIA, JC programs.  Take trips to the east, the west, the south, the north.  Be realistic with your choices and it will pay off.  Genuine interest during the season is worth way more than mass emails.  Call the football office and speak with a secretary to set up unofficial visits.  Simply say that you are a recruit.  It is VERY smart to plan these trips on a weekend when Chris Sailer Kicking is in town (see tip #4).  Attend the game on Saturday.  Attend the Chris Sailer Kicking camp on Sunday.

3. Attend private & group lessons.  Perfect your technique. Don’t ever think that you are to old or experienced to get better.  Believe me, you will get a major wake up call once you step foot on college campus.  Dominate through perfecting your technique.

4. Attend 1-Day Chris Sailer Kicking Fall Camps across the country.  Exposure is necessary.  Attend in your region, but also attend outside of your region (see tip #2).  If you want to play college football, you have to put in the effort.

5. Sign up for Vegas XXVII.  It is finally your time to compete for “TOP 12”.  Who has made “TOP 12” before you?  Here are a few names: Justin Tucker (Ravens), Blair Walsh (Vikings), Ryan Succop (Titans), Dan Bailey (Cowboys), Bryan Anger (Jaguars), Jeff Locke (Vikings), Brad Nortman (Panthers), Bradley Pinion (49ers), Colton Schmidt (Bills), Ryan Allen (Patriots), Tress Way (Redskins), Cody Parkey (Eagles), Dustin Hopkins (Redskins)…. just to name a few.  And it goes well beyond making “TOP 12”.  The experience, the connections, the friendships, the exposure, etc.  There will never be a camp more important than this.

Seniors:

1. Dominate the remaining part of your senior season.  It doesn’t matter if you are having a great season to date, or currently struggling for one reason or another.  Stay focuses or regather your focus and put your best foot forward from here are on out.  College coaches are watching very closely and beginning to make choices.

4. Attend 1-Day Chris Sailer Kicking Fall Camps across the country.  Exposure is necessary.  Attend in your region, but also attend outside of your region (see tip #2).  If you want to play college football, you have to put in the effort.

5. Sign up for Vegas XXVII.  This event was created in 2003 specifically for the senior class.  There is a reason why the camp is in January.  This is still the most important time in recruiting for the senior class.  National Letter of Intent signing day is in early February.  Over 95% of the senior class is NOT committed and have not received any sort of college offer.  Breathe, relax and get your mind focused on getting the exposure necessary at the most important time of your career. Every college coach in America will be waiting on these results.  Scholarships and preferred walk on opportunities will be decided in Las Vegas.

**** Note to those lucky few that are committed (Yes, I am talking to the “TOP 12” and “Event Elite” from last year).  The NFL Stars listed in tip #5 for juniors all attended this event as seniors as well.  They didn’t rest.  They continued to be hungry and dominate.  That is why they are stars.  The list of
“TOP 12” and “Event Elite” that decided to rest because they were already committed is much longer.  And close to 0% of them made it to the NFL.

Chris Sailer Kicking Keeping a Close Eye on Potential Draft Picks this Weekend…

Here at Chris Sailer Kicking we’ll be watching the NFL draft with great interest this weekend. We have some terrific alumni available for the draft. Here are some names of potential picks to keep an eye on:

Dustin Hopkins – Florida State, Kicker – Dustin hit on an FSU record 145 straight PATs putting him 6th on the all-time NCAA PAT streak list. He enters the draft as the number one kicking prospect in the country with BleacherReport.com predicting he could be a ten year kicker in the league. Good luck Dustin, we’ll be watching.

Jeff Locke – UCLA, Punter – This left-footer has a booming left and has been ranked in the top 100 players in this draft by several sources including NFL.com. Locke’s 44.58 yard career punting average for the Bruins ranks him second all-time at the school. We have high hopes for Jeff, and look forward to seeing him play on Sundays.

Quinn Sharp – Oklahoma State, Kicker – Quinn is OSU’s first three-time All-American. He has exceptional skills as a punter and kicker, averaging over 46 yards per punt last year and hitting on 85% of his field goals. BleacherReport.com compares him to the Viking’s Chris Kluwe. It’s been a lifelong goal of Quinn to play in the NFL. We’re rooting for you Quinn!

Ryan Allen – Louisiana Tech, Kicker – Ryan is the only kicker ever to win the Ray Guy Award in two consecutive years, 2011 and 2012. He averaged 48 yards on 45 kicks last year, and has an 85 yarder as his personal best. NFL.com’s Gil Brandt says it all with his comment “Allen has a very, VERY strong leg.” That he does. Best wishes this weekend Ryan!

Scott Kovanda – Ball State, Kicker – Scott was a finalist for this year’s Ray Guy Award. In 2012 only six of his punts were even returned, averaging over 40 yards per kick. Scott referred to his NFL combine visit as a job interview and compared the experience to speed dating. Go get ‘em Scott.

Zach Brown – Portland State, Kicker – NFL.com’s Senior Analyst Gil Brandt comments that “The ball just seems to jump off of his leg”. Zach’s real last name is Ramirez, but he used Brown at Portland State, where he hit on 17 of 18 FGs in 2012. At the school’s Pro Day he hit 6 out of 6 on his FG attempts hitting on 2 from 55 yards. Best of luck Zach, we look forward to seeing your winning smile in the NFL!

Quinn Sharp – Player Profile – Upcoming Draft Status

With the impending NFL draft, we would like to recognize another Chris Sailer Kicking alum, Quinn Sharp.

The versatile player has both skills as a Kicker and as a Punter. Quinn has had quite the college career at Oklahoma State University. He is the program’s first ever 3-time All-American. In 2010 he won the award as a Punter, and in 2011 and 2012 he was recognized as an All-American Kicker. He had a career punting average of almost 46 yards (45.9) which led active NCAA punters, and set a new OSU record. He had a career field goal accuracy of 84.7%, placing him second in the nation among active Kickers in the NCAA.

NFL.com notes his leg strength, particularly on kickoffs, and his 5-second plus hang times when punting inside the twenty. BleacherReport.com says he has a “NFL leg” and compares him to the Minnesota Vikings’ Chris Kluwe (another  CSK alum).

Quinn has always dreamed of being an NFL player, but Kickers are rarely drafted. In spite of that, there are those that expect him to go in the 6th or 7th round. Some analysts say his versatility could have him going as high as the 4th round.

Even if he goes to an NFL camp undrafted, he will certainly make his dream of playing pro ball come true. Chris Sailer Kicking is excited to watch the draft this week, and look forward to seeing our friend Quinn Sharp playing this fall on Sundays.

Profile on Dustin Hopkins: Kicker – Florida State

Former Chris Sailer Kicking alum Dustin Hopkins is about to enter the NFL draft following a record breaking, outstanding career at Florida State.

Hopkins’ legend at FSU started when, as a freshman, he nailed a 55 yard field goal to win the game against Clemson. The pressure packed kick came with 3 seconds remaining and the score tied.

In 2011, Dustin set a new record for FSU kickers when he connected on 109 straight PATs. He wouldn’t stop there however, going on to kick an amazing 145 straight, making it the 6th longest streak in NCAA history. In his senior year Hopkins set the NCAA Division I record for points ever scored by a kicker. His record stands at an amazing 448 points.

Now, he is entering the NFL draft as the number 1 kicking prospect in the country. Bleacher Report says this about Hopkins: “Strong and consistent fundamentals allow Hopkins to possess NFLeady kick power, both on field goals and kickoffs.” They go one to predict he could become a 10 year kicker in the league.

At Chris Sailer Kicking, we are proud of our alumni and wish him well in the draft. Chris is an exceptional athlete and his focus on fundamentals has, and will continue to, pay off. Congratulations to Dustin Hopkins. The NFL Draft begins Thursday April 25 and ends on April 27th. We’ll be watching!

CSK Alum Getting Ready for Upcoming NFL Draft

Chris Sailer Kicking has produced its share of current and past NFL kickers and that trend will continue at this month’s NFL Draft on April, 25th in New York. CSK has a number of alumni who will potentially be taken in the Draft this year. This obviously is an impressive accomplishment due to the sheer fact that NFL teams rarely take Specialists in the draft, although it is becoming more popular as of late.

We will be watching closely as these former CSK Alums look to get drafted:

Dustin Hopkins, Kicker, Florida State (6-2, 190 lbs.)

In his senior season, Hopkins made 25-of-30 field goal attempts and became the NCAA FBS all-time leading kick scorer. Strong on kickoffs as well, he could be the first kicker selected.

Quinn Sharp, Punter/Kicker, Oklahoma State (6-1, 205 lbs.)

Serving as Oklahoma State’s kicker and punter, Sharp has a big leg, as evidenced by punts with 5.0-plus seconds of hangtime and 70 percent of his kickoffs going for touchbacks. He might initially be a kickoff specialist but could develop into an NFL-caliber kicker or punter.

Others include:

Ryan Allen, Punter, Louisiana Tech (6-2, 215 lbs.)
Jeff Locke, Punter, UCLA (6-1, 203 lbs.)
Scott Kovanda, Punter, Ball State (6-3, 205 lbs.)

Wishing these guys the all the best in this year’s upcoming NFL Draft. Stay Tuned…

“Punters are People Too” Movement all started with CSK Alum Bryan Anger

In last April’s NFL Draft, Rich Eisen of the NFL Network coined the expression “Punters Are People Too” and what has ensued since has been a mini movement of sorts throughout the NFL.  Eisen proclaimed the now famous expression after the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Punter and Chris Sailer Kicking Alum Bryan Anger (Cal) in the 3rd round of last year’s NFL Draft.

Since that day the “Punters Are People Too” movement has created a frenzy amongnst NFL locker rooms. This was never more apparent than this past season when the Super Bowl Champs Baltimore Ravens wore the “Punters Are People Too” T-shirts in support of their Punter Sam Koch.

Punters Are People Too – Ravens

So, Punters all around the world owe a big thank you to Bryan Anger for the recent and well deserved respect they have been given of late.

Results…How do I determine them?

The definition of Results is:  a favorable or concrete outcome or effect.

One question we are consistently asked is, Does Chris Sailer Kicking provide results?  Results are determined by an individual and what they view a result to be, meaning people have their own idea of what a result can and should be.

The following are all types of “results” Kickers/Punters hope to achieve:

  • Better Technique
  • Better Consistency
  • Increased Exposure
  • College Scholarships
  • NFL Career

All of these “results” listed above have been achieved by many of the CSK alumni. Take this into consideration when choosing a camp, coach and personalized instruction. Ask yourself: Do they provide results?

The answer is clear at CSK, just take a look at our Alumni section on the website to see where all our former alumni are playing college or pro football.

Prior to attending a Kicking or Punting Camp always determine if they provide RESULTS!
