Nike Summer Camp in TX – RECAP

Chris Sailer Kicking Kickers and Punters came out to TX on Sunday, June 9th from all over the country to get the best instruction and exposure in the country for Kickers and Punters. The talent level at this camp was off the charts. Easily, the best I have seen in one location. The overall winner of the camp was Sam Wyand (2015 TX).  Wyand was extremely smooth and consistent all day long. He handled the pressure of the competition very well! Other Kickers and Punters that were exceptional throughout the day were…

Meet Mick Ellis

Mick Ellis is an 18 year old Texas native who grew up surrounded by football.  However, he didn’t always know he was going to be a kicker, an excellent kicker at that.  He was first thrown into the world of kicking when the football team he was playing for had an open position no one wanted to fill, Ellis stepped in.

“I was the only guy on the team that had played soccer so I gave it a try and ended up being good at it, so I stuck with it” said Ellis.

Wanting to improve his kicking skills Ellis began working with the professionals at Chris Sailer Kicking.  “The technique he teaches at all his camps I have used for all of my kicking” said Ellis of his experience at Chris Sailer Kicking.

In addition to great technique, Ellis found the atmosphere of camp to be beneficial to his football career, “how you go from practice to game [is important] and we practice like it is a game situation.”

Ellis spent last fall playing for Lovejoy High School in Lucas, Texas; but he doesn’t plan on ending his football career there.  He hopes to continue on to college football, with his top choices being Stanford, Ohio State, OSU, LSU, and Arkansas.  Along with his incredible leg, Ellis plans on taking everything he has learned at Chris Sailer Kicking with him to the college level.

“We practice with a lot of pressure and when you go to college there are 100 times more fans than you are used to, and it’s the exact same situation at all the camps” said Ellis.

His most recent accomplishments include: 2013 Vegas Event Class of 2014 FG Last Man Standing Champion, 2013 NC Nike Spring Camp Overall Champion, 2013 NC Nike Spring Camp Field Goal Champion, 2013 NC Nike Spring Camp Kickoff Champion and 2013 Vegas Spring Event Co-Kickoff Champion.

College Camps, How to Act?

If you are attending a college camp this summer, here are a few tips to help you maximize the experience and get noticed for the right reasons.

  • Always go in with a positive outlook. Positive attitudes will not just help you mentally, it can help a coach evaluate you as someone he would like on his team.

  • Get rid of distractions. Camp is important and it deserves your full attention. Focus on the task at hand and not on your smart phone. This means paying attention even when you are not the focus…because you just might be! Always act as if your coach is standing behind you.
  • Remain calm and stay confident. Coaches watch for how you react to negativity. This includes missing kicks. Keep your head up and maintain a “get ‘em next time” attitude.
  • Maintain your respect and listen to suggestions. “Yes sir coach, let me try that” is a simple way you can show respect for the coaches position AND for what he is saying. Coaches don’t expect you to be as good today as you are going to be tomorrow. Let them know you are willing and eager to improve.
  • Always compete at your best. Most coaches are more competitive than their players. They will respect a player who is always giving their best.

Remember, you are not in your hometown anymore. Players at college camps will have skills that can surprise you. You are literally “Kicking it up a notch”. Chris Sailer Kicking wishes you success!

Pros & Cons of Kicking on Turf vs. Grass…

Football surfaces have come a long way from when stadiums were multipurpose facilities. Both real grass and artificial surfaces are markedly better than even just ten years ago.

For Kickers, what are the pros and cons of kicking on grass vs turf? Let’s take a look at some considerations.

Consistency. Most Kickers would agree that a turf field will be consistent throughout the playing surface, while grass will have areas with varying “personalities”. While even turf surfaces will have differences between facilities, each field is generally consistent within itself.

Weather. Most modern fields have such good drainage it takes quite a deluge to dramatically affect the kicking surface. There are some turf surfaces that can actually be slicker than natural grass when wet. Snow can more easily be removed from turf surfaces.

Accuracy. Research shows field goal percentages are higher on turf as opposed to natural grass. This however, can also be misleading, as most stadiums that have natural grass are open air facilities.

Even many veteran Kickers in the NFL who initially preferred natural grass are becoming convinced that the new artificial turf surfaces provide a better opportunity for kicking success.

At Chris Sailer Kicking, we know the real difference is mainly between the Kicker’s ears. Control that piece of turf and you will see greater kicking success.

A Quality Highlight Tape Can Make a Difference…

A quality highlight video showing your kicking/punting skills can be invaluable in the college recruiting process. A video that is professionally filmed and edited will go a long way to show coaches that you are serious about your kicking career.

At Chris Sailer Kicking, we are now pleased to offer highlight tapes of Kickers/Punters who attend our camps. Our experience has taught us what coaches are looking for in a highlight tape, and we provide the angles and results that they wish to see.

When your tape is produced you own it and you are welcome to do with it as you please. We of course suggest you email it to coaches, add it to your Chris Sailer Kicking Player Ranking Profile and your NCSA Player Profile. With YouTube the second largest search engine in the world, you should upload it there as well, making sure you use some appropriate keywords.

You have invested time, hard work, and money into moving forward with your kicking career. Take the next step and get a quality highlight video made. You can learn more about the videos available at Chris Sailer Kicking Camps by visiting our website.

Chris Sailer Kicking is happy to announce that Highlight Videos will now be available for purchase at Chris Sailer Kicking Camps/Events.  The very first opportunity to purchase a professional quality highlight video will be this weekend at the 11th Annual National Kicking Spring Event in Las Vegas May 4-5.  This is an incredible opportunity and will only be available to the first 30 Kickers, Punters, or Long Snappers that reserve their video.  We are offering a discounted promotional rate of $100 for Vegas this year.  Here is how it will work:

1. You can preegister for this service by emailing [email protected].  In the subject line type: “Vegas Video”.  The staff will get back to you with further instructions.

2. You can register for this service in Las Vegas.  However, if 30 others preegister, unfortunately the service will no longer be available.  If you choose to take this route, you are taking a big risk.

Sample Videos were taken this past weekend at the 11th Annual National Kicking Preparation camp in Los Angeles.  These are rough cuts, so you can imagine how great the finished products will look.  If you choose to purchase a highlight video, the video will be yours to use as you see fit.  My recommendation: Email the video to coaches, Add the video to your Chris Sailer Kicking Player Ranking Profile, Add the Video to your NCSA Player Profile.

I highly recommend that you take advantage of this service.  Creating a quality kicking / punting highlight video can be a difficult task.  This small investment is well worth the reward.

Chris Sailer Kicking Keeping a Close Eye on Potential Draft Picks this Weekend…

Here at Chris Sailer Kicking we’ll be watching the NFL draft with great interest this weekend. We have some terrific alumni available for the draft. Here are some names of potential picks to keep an eye on:

Dustin Hopkins – Florida State, Kicker – Dustin hit on an FSU record 145 straight PATs putting him 6th on the all-time NCAA PAT streak list. He enters the draft as the number one kicking prospect in the country with BleacherReport.com predicting he could be a ten year kicker in the league. Good luck Dustin, we’ll be watching.

Jeff Locke – UCLA, Punter – This left-footer has a booming left and has been ranked in the top 100 players in this draft by several sources including NFL.com. Locke’s 44.58 yard career punting average for the Bruins ranks him second all-time at the school. We have high hopes for Jeff, and look forward to seeing him play on Sundays.

Quinn Sharp – Oklahoma State, Kicker – Quinn is OSU’s first three-time All-American. He has exceptional skills as a punter and kicker, averaging over 46 yards per punt last year and hitting on 85% of his field goals. BleacherReport.com compares him to the Viking’s Chris Kluwe. It’s been a lifelong goal of Quinn to play in the NFL. We’re rooting for you Quinn!

Ryan Allen – Louisiana Tech, Kicker – Ryan is the only kicker ever to win the Ray Guy Award in two consecutive years, 2011 and 2012. He averaged 48 yards on 45 kicks last year, and has an 85 yarder as his personal best. NFL.com’s Gil Brandt says it all with his comment “Allen has a very, VERY strong leg.” That he does. Best wishes this weekend Ryan!

Scott Kovanda – Ball State, Kicker – Scott was a finalist for this year’s Ray Guy Award. In 2012 only six of his punts were even returned, averaging over 40 yards per kick. Scott referred to his NFL combine visit as a job interview and compared the experience to speed dating. Go get ‘em Scott.

Zach Brown – Portland State, Kicker – NFL.com’s Senior Analyst Gil Brandt comments that “The ball just seems to jump off of his leg”. Zach’s real last name is Ramirez, but he used Brown at Portland State, where he hit on 17 of 18 FGs in 2012. At the school’s Pro Day he hit 6 out of 6 on his FG attempts hitting on 2 from 55 yards. Best of luck Zach, we look forward to seeing your winning smile in the NFL!
