Recruiting Simplified

Recruiting is full of ups and downs, full of emotional highs and lows, full of stress… but ultimately the prize at the end of the process will be well worth it…. IF you handle the process correctly.

Here is a guide for Kickers & Punters , in its simplest for, to live by.

Freshman Year:
– Focus on getting better (Lessons, Camps, Vegas, Underclassmen Invitational).

Sophomore Year:
– Focus on getting better (Lessons, Camps, Vegas, Underclassmen Invitational).
– Attend 1 or max 2 college camps simply for experience.

Junior Year:
– Focus on getting better (Lessons).
– Dominate competition (Camps, Vegas, TOP 12 Camp, FBU Top Gun, College Camps).

Senior Year:
– Focus on getting better (Lessons).
– Dominate competition (Camps, Vegas).
– Be patient.  Recruiting does not end on signing date (NLOI) in February. Recruiting ends in August once Fall Camps begin.
– Realize that lessons and camps do not end once you commit, in fact they are just as important or even more important.  Those who continue to stay focused will be ready for college.  Those who don’t, will sit on the bench in college. Attend regional camps, attend Vegas, attend the CSK College Camp that summer.

If you are not committed by signing day (NLOI) here are some tools to use to find the right college fit:
– You are part of the majority, not the minority.  Take a look: 2017 Rankings as of 3/1/17
– Every college will take 1 Kicker and 1 Punter per year on average.  There are hundreds of colleges, do the math.  There are opportunity out there.
– Be proactive.  Sitting on your couch and waiting for a call is not going to work.  Sending emails without any action is not going to work.  Waiting on your high school coach or Chris Sailer is not going to work.
– Visit colleges, get on campus! This will show a coach genuine interest.  Get face time and tell that coach that you want a roster spot and a chance to compete.  Don’t just ask for a scholarship.
– Be open to MANY colleges, not just a short list.  Dedicate the months of March, April, May & beyond to this task.
– Use NCSA, they will hook you up with many options.
– In the end, I believe everything happens for a reason.  You will end up where you belong as long as you are open minded.  Choose the school that is right for you.  Transferring should not be an option.

So You Didn’t Make TOP 12, Now What?

For the past few weeks, you have been watching the TOP 12 Kickers / Punters get chosen one by one. Each time a selection was made, one person was ecstatic while countless others felt the opposite emotions. When the final TOP 12 Camp Invitee was chosen a balloon was popped for many 2018, 2019 and even some 2020 Kickers / Punters. Now what?

Couple ways to look at it….

You can be upset with me for not selecting you. You can be upset with yourself for not performing when it counted. You can even find a way to blame others, but, it is ultimately on you. The only thing you can control is how hard and smart you work. Everyone in Vegas is competing for the same spots. Don’t let anybody outwork you and you will see different results.

You need to use this as motivation to make sure you perform better. This is all up to you. The choice is yours.

If you are a Kicker / Punter that strives to be the best, you want to be at that TOP 12 camp this summer. Any single athlete that has been there (scholarship Kickers / Punters, All-Americans, NFL players) will tell you it is, by far, the best camp they have ever been to in their life. What you need to do is get back on the horse. Work smarter and harder. Your opportunity is waiting for you in Las Vegas. VEGAS 30

At Vegas 30, I will choose 20 additional TOP 12 Camp Invitees.  They will join the first 20 selected at the Invite Only TOP 12 Camp this summer.   This is a true invite only camp. I do NOT just hand out invites to get people to come to it. That would give me no credibility. I choose the best because they are the best. They will represent the TOP 12 and Chris Sailer Kicking forever.

Remember there will be a web series all about this year’s TOP 12.  Don’t miss out.

Are you one of them? Time to decide. Prove to me, and the rest of the world, that you belong.

Or don’t.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS…..

Introducing the new TOP 12 Camp format.  This year 40-45 specialists will be invited to attend the TOP 12 Camp that will take place this summer.  20 Kickers/Punters will be selected in January at Vegas XXIX and 20 additional Kickers/Punters will be selected in May at Vegas 30.  Chris Sailer reserves the right to select 5 additional wild card Kickers/Punters at any point throughout the year.  These 40-45 specialists will compete to make the official 2017 TOP 12. The competition, both physically and mentally, will be like no other camp. The entire process will be captured in a web series (TOP 12 Camp Series). The web series will capture everything from the the behind the scenes moments, to the on field competitions, to the mentally challenging interviews, to the ups and downs of the the entire TOP 12 selection process. 2017 NFL Free Agent Training Opportunity!

Baltimore Ravens Kicker, Justin Tucker (#9)

In lieu of a Chris Sailer Kicking NFL camp this year, I will be personally offering private lessons in California. Spots are limited and I will not be taking a mass group.

After speaking with college coaches, NFL coaches, scouts and agents, I was advised to run specific lessons, this year.  My goal is to get each NFL prospect ready by offering more one on one interaction and relay the results to scouts and agents. Last year alone, Chris Sailer Kicking had NINETEEN Kickers and Punters start in the NFL.  Many others earned signed contracts and earned tryouts based on Chris Sailer Kicking film and my word.

For this year, Chris Sailer Kicking will not be running a NFL Free Agent camp to focus solely on the private lessons with NFL Free Agents.

Jacksonville Jaguars Punter, Bryan Anger (#19)

One of the things the coaches, scouts and agents liked the most is that there was no bias. If you can kick and punt at the next level, I tell them that. If you can’t kick and punt at the next level, I tell them that as well. I don’t care if I have seen you at my camps or not. This is all about a bottom line with the NFL. You either are the full package or you are not. College coaches trust what I say.

Minnesota Vikings Kicker, Kai Forbath (#2)

The lessons will offer the following….

  • Private instruction with me personally
  • Film to review as well film to send out to agents and teams with my stamp of approval on it.
  • Game plan to get each Kicker/Punter ready for their pro day.

I will get you ready, it is up to you what you do when you get there!

If interested, email [email protected] as are limited and once they are gone, they are gone.

Washington Redskins Kicker, Tress Way (#5)

NLOI (National Letter of Intent) Day!

Tomorrow, high school football players around the country will be signing on the dotted line to play for their respective schools. It is a great time of the year for all involved. It is NLOI (National Letter of Intent) Signing Day. It is covered by major sports affiliates and it begins the process of which college will dominate tomorrow with the stellar high school athletes of today.

With all the hoopla, comes questions….allow me clear some things up for everyone. These are all from questions I have received over the years.

Eddy Pineiro Signs with Florida last year.

Is Signing Day the only day an athlete can sign with a college?
Absolutely not. It is just the first official day for the seniors to make their commitment official. A scholarship athlete can sign anytime on or after that day. You can literally sign the day you get on campus if you are a late pick-up for a school. The whole Signing Day Event is a celebration day that the media has turned it into a major event.

Do Preferred Walk-Ons sign on Signing Day?
No, they do not officially sign anything. However, many schools and parents like to have a simple ceremony that represents signing. A preferred walk-on, although verbally committed to a school is NOT locked into that respective school. They have the option to change their mind to another school at any point if a scholarship comes their way. Not exactly the most kosher thing to do to a coach/program but they would most likely understand. I look at it like this, an athlete not taking a scholarship would be similar to a person not taking a free car and opting to pay for the same car.

If I sign with a college on scholarship, can I adjust after?
Sure, BUT you will lose a year of eligibility. Once you sign, you are locked in. Don’t even think about transferring as it rarely works out and is an uphill battle to say the least. Think about it, why would a coach want an athlete that could not fit in at their first stop? A transfer athlete always brings up red flags…why is it going to work this time, why did he not get along with players and coaches at the first school, it is a homesick issue, is he a problem case, schooling? All are questions that a new coach is going to want to know about you. Bottom line, make your decision and stick with it.

How do the schools get the athletes signatures?
Most athletes sign in the early morning and then fax them in to their new home (school).

Why have a Signing Day?
It is the day your verbal commitment becomes official.

Can a junior that is offered a scholarship sign early?
Nope. They must wait just like the others within his graduating class. All of this waiting around gives way to all the committing and de-committing which coaches and sports writers absolutely love (dripping with sarcasm).

Is it true that scholarships have to be renewed every year by the school?
Yes. This is one of those things that not a lot of people know about but it is true. Every single year, the staff has to renew your scholarship for the next year. Therefore, if you are not producing as an athlete, student or person, your scholarship can not be renewed. It is not very common for it to happen, but I have witnessed it occur. Usually, a social issue is the final straw in saying bye bye to your education being paid for by the school.

All in all, Signing Day is a great thing that should be cherished by all but definitely don’t feel as though it is the end all be all. No matter when you sign, you are still going to be on full scholarship with your school paid for, and that is the most important thing.

The National Placekicker of the Year is named in honor of Chris Sailer for his outstanding high school career and nearly single handedly changing the world of kicking and punting as we know it.  Chris is now the most prominent private kicking and punting  coach in World.  He has made the positions of kicking and punting  a specialty and is revered around the country through his website, as well as camps.  Through his training and development of young kickers and punter, almost 100 high school and junior college kicking & punting specialists now receive full ride scholarships each year for their skill in that position.

Chris Sailer played for Notre Dame High School (1993-1995).  He was an All-American PK and Punter. In 1994 he set the national record for most field goals in a season with 22.  Of those 22 field goals, 7 came from beyond 50 yards including success from 58, 57, 57, 54, 52, 52 and 50 yards.  Chris Sailer was rewarded with a full ride scholarship to UCLA in 1995.  He went on to earn All-American Honors as both a placekicker and punter during his time at UCLA. He was a Lou Groza Award Finalist in 1997. He set multiple records while at UCLA including longest field goal of 56 yards (still stands).  He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers and went on to enjoy an 7 year professional career.

2016 GA Fall Camp Recap – Vicente Wins It!

The 2016 Chris Sailer Kicking Fall Camp Tour concluded that past weekend with a final stop in Atlanta, GA.  Once again well over 100 specialists were in attendance representing over a dozen states.  The talent at this camp never disappoints.  Many of these athletes will be in the hunt for a TOP 12 spot this coming January in Las Vegas.  Take a look at the results.

Overall Camp Champion
Gabriel Vicente (TR, FL) – The first time Chris Sailer Kicking student put in an impressive first performance, defeating many of the top national kicking prospect for the victory.  He stepped up when it counted the most and won a major field goal competition by nailing 6-7 of field goals in including a long of 54 yards.  He then swept through the semi-finals and finals round without missing a kick.  Gabriel is a talented transfer student who has the talent to challenge at any level.

Field Goal Champion
Jake Lane (2017, AL) – The longtime Chris Sailer Kicking student and Event Elite Member had another strong day from start to finish.  Coming off a season where he went 22-26 on field goals and recently being named a Sailer Award Finalist, he stepped up once again.  He went over 80% on the day and showed off his big leg by nailing several 50+ yard field goals.  He was also outstanding on both kickoff and punt.  Jake is ready for the next level.

Kickoff Champion
BT Potter (2018, SC) – BT was quite possibly the most talented kicker at the entire camp.  He is a great athlete with elite leg strength.  BT hit several field goals of 50+ yards off the ground and kicked with nice consistency.  He also dominated kickoffs all day long, winning the competition with a 70 yard, 4.00 second kick in less than perfect conditions.  He is also proving to be a capable punter.  BT is a top national prospect that will challenge for a TOP 12 spot this coming January in Las Vegas.

Punt Champion
Taylor Goettie (2017, GA) – Taylor put on a phenomenal performance from start to finish.  He proved he was easily the best punter at camp and dominated all punting competitions.  He is a great athlete with a big time leg.  He averaged well over 45 yards all day and hit some 60+ yard bombs.  Taylor punts for tremendous distance and shows flashes of great hang time.  He is a gifted recruit that could be a great steal in this recruiting class.  Look for Taylor to turn the heads of college coaches in Vegas.

Best Of The Best – Class of 2017

Alex Usry (GA) – One of the most consistent kickers in the nation.  He has a D1 leg and does his best under pressure.  An experienced and confident young man that is ready for the next level.

Jose Perez (FL) – Talented athlete with D1 talent.  Solid on field goals, big kickoffs & a capable punter.   Will make a fine addition to any college team.

Other 2017 Standouts: Dallas Goddin, Jake Ramirez (TR), Keaton Borrelli, Zach Montrief, Ben DiRosa, Matt DiRosa.

Best Of The Best – Class of 2018

Cole Hanna (GA) – Cole is a gifted kicker that kicks with great technique and consistency.  He nearly won both the field goal and kickoff competitions.  He has a bright college future.

Mitchell Fineran (GA) – Mitchell is an excellent prospect.  He hits a pure ball of the ground and drives the ball deep on kickoffs.  Has the tools to challenge the very best.

Trey Smelcer (NC ) – The 6’7” specialist has great potential.  A big, tall, strong athlete that shows flashes of what he is capable as both a kicker and punter.  Watch out Vegas.

Other 2018 Standouts: Michael Ho, Alex Hardy, Bryce Jones, Drew Cassiday, McKay Taylor, Perry Shelbred, Collin Dempster, Josh Smith, Charles King.

Best Of The Best – 2019

Brock Travelstead (GA) – Brock is a long time Chris Sailer Kicking student that has all the tools to be a top national prospect in this class.  He has a great leg and kicks with nice technique.

James Williams (GA) – James looks a freshman in a seniors body.  He is a naturally gifted kicker with an exceptional leg for his age.  The future is bright with continued hard work.

Hayden Olsen (GA) – Hayden is another longtime Chris Sailer Kicking student that is well on his way.  Hayden is very accurate and kicks with nice technique and confidence.
