2016 TX Spring Camp, Freshman Will Reichard Wins It!

The 2016 Chris Sailer Kicking Spring Camp Tour got off to a great start in Dallas, TX this past weekend.  Well over 100 athletes from 10 plus states were in attendance.  The camp featured long time Chris Sailer Kicking kicker and staff member Nick Folk of the New York Jets.  He gave a fantastic demonstration and stood in on all the meetings offering priceless advice.  The mixture of outstanding veterans and talented newcomers at the camp made for excellent competition.  Take a look at the results.

Camp Champion: Will Reichard (2019, AL)
The long time Chris Sailer Kicking student came through with a breakthrough performance.  The #1 kicker in the nation in the Class of 2019 proved why in a major way.  He is the first freshman to win a regional camp in many years.  He hit multiple 50 plus yard field goals and his kickoffs were all 65 plus yards with 3.8 plus hang time.  He is an extraordinary talent.  One of the very best that I have seen at this age since Cody Parkey, now of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Field Goal Champion: Austin Neuhauser (2017, OK)
Austin put in an impressive performance in Dallas.  He was also a standout last month in Las Vegas.  Austin is proving he is a top national prospect in the Class of 2017.  He hits a pure ball off the ground and shows 55+ yard range.  His kickoffs are also competitive with the very best.  Look for Austin to gain the attention of major college coaches around the nation this off season.

Kickoff Champion: Davis Price (2016, CO)
Another long time Chris Sailer Kicking student was dominant on kickoffs all day.  He won the competition by hitting a 76 yard, 4.08 hang time kickoff.  He has really come into his own and is ready to move on to the college level.  He has the talent to compete at any level.

Punt Champion: Bernardo Palacios (2017, TX)
This was Bernardo’s first camp with us, but he stepped up when it counted the most.  He consistently hit 40 plus yard punts, with 4.4 plus yard hang time.  He is a talented athlete that shows the ability to compete with the top punters in his class.  Keep a close eye on him this spring and summer.

Other 2016 Standouts:
John Dellagarza (TX) – John is a talented punting prospect.  He has the size and skill set to compete at the D1 level.

Grant Perkins (TX) – Grant is a strong legged kicker that has excellent potential. His field goals and kickoffs both show great promise.

Other Class of 2017 Standouts:
Liam Jones (OK) – Liam is a great kicking prospect.  He is smooth and accurate on field goals.  His kickoffs are strong.  He has a bright college future.

Josh Grant (TX) – Josh is one of the best kickers in the nation.  He gets excellent height on his field goals off the ground.  His kickoffs are near the top of his class.

Blake Mazza (TX) – Blake is an excellent talent.  He hits a great ball off the ground on field goals.  His kickoffs are also a strong point.

Nick Horiates (TX) – The long time Chris Sailer Kicking student had his best day yet.  He was dominant at times on both field goals and kickoffs.  Tons of talent here.

Also keep an eye on: Kevin Madigan, Eric Carrasco, Turner Davidson, Miguel Aponte, Michael Ewton, Tristan Perry.

Top 2018 Prospects:
Cole Talley (TX) – Cole has one of the strongest legs in his class.  He shows flashes of dominance on both field goals and kickoffs.  A great athlete with a bright future.

John Mayers (TX) – John had an impressive camp.  He has a big time leg and shows he can hit an excellent ball off the ground.  Kickoffs are also strong.

Also keep an eye on: Christopher Freibert, Jim Hayden, Matthew Martin, Jacob Meeks, Evan Price, Ryan Scott, Jake Smith, Hayden Nelson, Nick O’Shea.

2019 Future Stars: Alex Felkins, Neal Koskay, Josh Plaster, Luis Reyna, Austin Rychlik, Tyler Shearer, Logan Shields.

Youth Prospects: Tabor Allen, James Griffith, Preston Johnson.

So You Didn’t Make “TOP 12”, What Now?

For the past month or so, you have been watching the “TOP 12” Kickers / Punters get chosen one by one. Each time a selection was made, one person was ecstatic while countless others felt the opposite emotions. When the final TOP 12er was chosen and a balloon was popped for many 2017, 2018 and even some 2019 Kickers / Punters. Now what?

Couple ways to look at it….

You can be upset with me for not selecting you. You can be upset with yourself for not performing when it counted. You can even find a way to blame others, but, it is ultimately on you. The only thing you can control is how hard and smart you work. Everyone in Vegas is competing for the same spots. Don’t let anybody outwork you and you will see different results.

You need to use this as motivation to make sure you perform better. This is all up to you. The choice is yours.

If you are a Kicker / Punter that strives to be the best, you want to be at that “TOP 12” camp this summer. Any single athlete that has been there (scholarship Kickers / Punters, All-Americans, NFL players) will tell you it is, by far, the best camp they have ever been to in their life. What you need to do is get back on the horse. Work smarter and harder. Your opportunity is waiting for you in Las Vegas. VEGAS XXVIII

At Vegas XXVIII, I choose the “EVENT ELITE”. The “EVENT ELITE” is the best of the best from Vegas in May. They join the “TOP 12” to form the “TOP 12” and “EVENT ELITE” Invite Only Camp on July 18-20, 2016. There is no set number for the “EVENT ELITE”. I could choose one K/P or I can choose 30. It all depends on the talent. I don’t choose just to choose. It would make me look ignorant in the end. If I say you belong at that camp, you are one of the best in the world. This is a true invite only camp. I do NOT just hand out invites to get people to come to it. That would give me no credibility. I choose the best because they are the best. They will represent the “TOP 12”, “ EVENT ELITE” and Chris Sailer Kicking the best in the future.

Are you one of them? Time to decide. Prove to me, and the rest of the world, that you belong.

Or don’t.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS…..

NLOI (National Letter of Intent) Day!

Tomorrow, high school football players around the country will be signing on the dotted line to play for their respective schools. It is a great time of the year for all involved. It is NLOI (National Letter of Intent) Signing Day. It is covered by major sports affiliates and it begins the process of which college will dominate tomorrow with the stellar high school athletes of today.

With all the hoopla, comes questions….allow me clear some things up for everyone. These are all from questions I have received over the years.

Is Signing Day the only day an athlete can sign with a college?
Absolutely not. It is just the first official day for the seniors to make their commitment official. A scholarship athlete can sign anytime on or after that day. You can literally sign the day you get on campus if you are a late pick-up for a school. The whole Signing Day is just a lot of pomp and circumstance that the media has turned it into an event.

Do Preferred Walk-Ons sign on Signing Day?
No, they do not officially sign anything. However, many schools and parents like to have a simple ceremony that represents signing. A preferred walk-on, although verbally committed to a school is NOT locked into that respective school. They have the option to change their mind to another school at any point if a scholarship comes their way. Not exactly the most kosher thing to do to a coach/program but they would most likely understand. I look at it like this, an athlete not taking a scholarship would be similar to a person not taking a free car and opting to pay for the same car.

If I sign with a college on scholarship, can I adjust after?
Sure, BUT you will lose a year of eligibility. Once you sign, you are done. Don’t even think about transferring as it rarely works out and is an uphill battle to say the least. Think about it, why would a coach want an athlete that could not fit in at their first stop? A transfer athlete always brings up red flags…why is it going to work this time, why did he not get along with players and coaches at the first school, it is a homesick issue, is he a problem case, schooling? All are questions that a new coach is going to want to know about you. Bottom line, make your decision and stick with it.

How do the schools get the athletes signatures?
Most athletes sign in the early morning and then fax them in to their new home (school).

Why have a Signing Day?
It is the day your verbal commitment becomes official.

Can a junior that is offered a scholarship sign early?
Nope. They must wait just like the others within his graduating class. All of this waiting around gives way to all the committing and de-committing which coaches and sports writers absolutely love (dripping with sarcasm).

Is it true that scholarships have to be renewed every year by the school?
Yes. This is one of those things that not a lot of people know about but it is true. Every single year, the staff has to renew your scholarship for the next year. Therefore, if you are not producing as an athlete, student or person, your scholarship can not be renewed. It is not very common for it to happen, but I have witnessed it occur. Usually, a social issue is the final straw in saying bye bye to your education being paid for by the school.

All in all, Signing Day is a great thing that should be cherished by all but definitely don’t feel as though it is the end all be all. No matter when you sign, you are still going to be on full scholarship with your school paid for, and that is the most important thing.

2016 Rankings Complete Post Vegas XXVII, Rankings Explained

The Class of 2016 Chris Sailer Kicking rankings are now completely updated post Vegas XXVII.  NLOI Day (National Letter Of Intent) is coming up February 3rd.  Vegas results and rankings have already made a major impact on college recruitment.  Chris Sailer Kicking now has 40, 5-Star Rated Kickers and 22, 5-Star Rated Punters.  This is an all time record.  These rankings are ratings are 100% earned and not simply given.  Over 800 Specialists are now ranked in the class of 2016.  Things have just begun.  Some have made commitments, while the vast majority still wait to see their final college destinations.  Remember recruiting goes all the way up and through August.

2016 RANKINGS – CLICK HERE

Up next, Class of 2017 Rankings.  Stay Tuned….

Here is a detailed explanation of how Chris Sailer Kicking Rankings are compiled.

1. We will only rank a player that we have seen IN PERSON.  Film is great, but it does not compare to an in person evaluation.  An in person evaluation can be at a private lesson, group lesson, camp, or national event run by Chris Sailer Kicking. College camps are NOT taken into consideration. The evaluation must and will only be done by Chris Sailer (Kickers / Punters) and Chris Rubio (Long Snappers) and staff.  We do not use anyone outside of the company for evaluations.  This is the only way we can assure 100% accuracy.

2. We do not rank all players that we see.  We only rank players that we feel show the ability or potential to one day compete at the college level.  We take effort, work ethic, and attitude into consideration when determining if a player meets the above criteria.

3.  Our rankings are subjective, not objective.  We focus on our evaluation, not just stats.  Stats may be misleading.  We are the professionals at what we do.  Our rankings will take the following criteria into consideration: 1. Current Skill Level, 2. Potential Skill Level, 3. Performance Under Pressure.  We look for the following: technique, strength, leg speed, athleticism, mental toughness, competitiveness, confidence, tee sizes to name a few.

4. The ranking system is as follows.  After every camp, we evaluate each player.  They are then added to or adjusted on the PLAYER RANKINGS site of Chris Sailer Kicking.com

Star Rating System:
5 Stars: D1 Scholarship Player
4 1/2 Stars: D1 Talent (D1 Preferred Walk-On or possible D1 Scholarship Player)
4 Stars: D2 Talent (D2 Scholarship or Possible D1 Preferred Walk-On)
3 1/2 Stars:  D3 Talent (D3 Scholarship or Possible D2 or D1AA Preferred Walk-On)
3 Stars: D3 Talent (D3 Preferred Walk-On)

Number Ranking System:
Will list the exact number rank of the player from (#1 through #……)  #1 being the very best in the nation, and so on.

The Star Rating and the Number Ranking is an evaluation based on that day.  So, younger players usually do not receive 4 and 5 star rankings yet.  Older players earn the higher rating as they begin to show more of the criteria necessary to be considered a college prospect.  Rankings change on a daily basis.  You can always improve your rank the next time we see you.

*Understand, rankings are not complete until fall camp begins your freshman year of college.  We will see new players constantly and the rankings will constantly be updated.  You have to work to maintain or increase your ranking.  You are only as good as the last time we saw you.  We cannot predict the future.  You will see that we will now list (Student Since: – to show when we first evaluated a player & Last Evaluation: – to show the last time we evaluated that player).  These pieces of information will help both the players and college coaches better understand the accuracy of the rating and ranking.

5.  Once a player is ranked you are in our system until you begin your fall camp as a freshman in college.  You will never be dropped in the rankings.  However as we see new players or current players improve their ranking, you will slide naturally.  Again rankings are not complete until fall camp begins your freshman year of college.  That is when the rankings are as accurate as can be and are removed from the website.  You can increase your ranking by attending any future lesson, camp, or event.  A rating and ranking becomes much more accurate the more often we see a player.  We see improvement, we get to know a player mentally, and the player generally becomes much better physically and technically.  A college coach will always ask the question, “How many times have you worked with him?”  Why?  Because he wants to be sure that our evaluation is accurate and not a fluke.  He wants to be sure that we know that player mentally as well as possible before a large scholarship investment is made by the University.   Certain players are phenoms and earn 5 star rankings right off the bat.  It is just a no brainer.  But most must work hard to establish consistency and improvement over time.  Our confidence in you as a player is a BIG DEAL.  We have to know who and what it is we are recommending.

6. Once a player is ranked, we do take season stats into consideration.  Because there are so many factors out of your control at the high school level (coach, opportunities, snapper, holder, field condition, etc.) most players never get the chance to put up big numbers – this will not hurt you.  Both we and college coaches understand this.  But, if you happen to be fortunate enough to put up great stats, this can help you.  We don’t put a huge amount of stock in your season stats, but a good season can definitely help prove that you are consistent over time and that you can perform well under pressure.

7.  Vegas statistics.  Yes, they are great as they give us all something to look at.  However, they are NOT the only factor we take into consideration when updating the rankings.  They are a small piece of the puzzle (see above #’s 1-7).  Please do not just look at the stats and send us a spreadsheet as to why you should be ranked ahead of someone else.  I promise you, we do a thorough evaluation that looks at all your kicks from both Saturday and Sunday.  And we take into consideration past camp performances.  A bad statistical day isn’t going to effect the great statistical days that a player may have had in the past.  The statistics from Vegas are big for many reasons, but please remember that we look at EVERYTHING.

8.  The Kicking and Punting Rankings are completely separate.  One does not effect the other and vice versa.  However doing well in both is always a positive for college coaches.  Combo players are rare and are a hot commodity.

Chris Rubio and myself are very confident in our player evaluations.  The ranking / rating is intended to help each player find the right college fit for THEM.  If you are ranked that is a tremendous accomplishment.  You should be proud of yourself.  No matter the ranking/rating, use it as motivation to continue to improve.  Remember, you are only in High School or Junior College.  This is only the beginning.  Keep working hard and you will achieve your goals.  We are here to help you reach your goals.  We are always here as a reference for you.  Please DO list our name and contact information in your correspondence with college coaches  and on your highlight videos.  I promise you, it is worth it.

You Are a Senior, Now What?

So, you are a 2016 Kicker/Punter and you are most likely really getting stressed out about the next four years of your life. Either you are committed already and think you are the greatest or you haven’t committed and are wondering what is next?

This blog is going to be in two parts….first for the UNCOMMITTED, second for the COMMITTED.

For the UNCOMMITTED

  • First off, CHILL! It is still early in the recruiting process, trust me. Recruiting goes all the way through August.
  • Second, do NOT slack on your grades. Nothing worse than getting a call from a school but you can’t go to them because your grades aren’t up to par.
  • Continue to work with a Chris Sailer Kicking Staff Member in your area and DOMINATE all Chris Sailer Kicking camps in your area (yes, you can AND should keep going to Chris Sailer Kicking camps when you are a senior). You never know when the right school is going to contact me looking for a Kicker/Punter like you. You should still be going to Chris Sailer Kicking Camps in your area to get ready for VEGAS XXVIII in May. May Vegas is essentially your last chance to make it happen.
  • Fourth, you are the “old” guy at the camps now so you need to act like it…be mature, be confident, be nice to the young guys as you were once them.

For the COMMITTED

  • First off, NEVER, EVER STOP getting better. There is nothing that will upset a coach more than having a scholarship or preferred walk-on Kicker/Punter come into camp looking sloppy. They will EASILY be able to tell you if you haven’t improved since the time they recruited you. Don’t be that guy.
  • Second, do NOT slack on your grades. Sadly, I have had a kid lose a scholarship because his final semester grades slacked so much.
  • Third, NEVER stop improving and getting ready for the next stage of your life. Work with a Chris Sailer Kicking Staff Member and DOMINATE all Chris Sailer Kicking camps in your area. (yes, you can AND should keep going to Chris Sailer Kicking camps when you are a senior)
